Rovers enjoy dream home result

What a day for Letterkenny Rovers.

Leckview Park was set for the club’s first home fixture in the newly formed FAI National League, with a dry afternoon and a superb crowd of 736 creating a fitting occasion for the visit of Mayo FC.

Mayo began brightly when Darragh Forde broke down the right before cutting inside, only for his effort to be blocked. However, it was Rovers who struck the first decisive blow.

After three minutes, Keith Cowan played a quick forward ball into the path of Ronan McHugh. The Rovers forward showed real pace to race clear from halfway, beat Mayo defender Oisín O’Reilly to the ball and then finished calmly beyond goalkeeper Matthew Fox, rolling the ball into the left corner to put the hosts 1–0 ahead.

Rovers continued to look dangerous in transition. Luke Parke won possession around halfway and slipped McHugh through again down the right, but this time Fox was equal to the effort. Mayo responded with a Sean McAteer effort from distance that drifted narrowly wide, while another attempt from the right flashed wide of the near post.

Letterkenny’s second goal arrived after 17 minutes and gave the home side a valuable cushion.

Dean McCarry delivered an excellent ball from the right, with Parke arriving in the penalty area before the ball found Adrian Delap. Delap’s attempt was blocked, but Parke reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired the rebound into the net to make it 2–0.

Mayo enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure after the second goal and forced Rovers to defend with discipline. A dangerous free kick from the left was cleared by Delap at the near post, while another cross from the left found Sean McAteer arriving late, but he lifted his finish over from close range.

Rovers continued to be tested. Ben Edeh played a dangerous ball from the right toward two Mayo runners in the central area, but Patrick McGarvey produced an important save on 26 minutes. At the other end, McHugh headed straight at the goalkeeper after a far-side cross, while Ryan Shields could not direct a deep Joel Gorman corner on target.

Mayo had one further opening before the break when a free kick dropped around the edge of the box. Rovers blocked the initial attempts, and Guga Kokaia sent the recycled effort over the bar from distance.

Rovers went in at half-time leading 2–0.

Second Half

The second half saw Mayo push forward in search of a way back into the match, but Rovers defended their lead with organisation and commitment.

Sean McAteer delivered a dangerous cross across the six-yard area on 57 minutes, but McCarry was alert at the back post to head clear. Ben Edeh then took aim from just outside the area on 62 minutes, with a deflection sending his effort dipping narrowly wide of the left post. Another Sean McAteer corner caused concern before Daire O’Connor directed the ball back into the danger area, only for the Rovers defence to clear.

The visitors continued to pose a threat from set pieces. McAteer delivered a free kick from around 30 yards toward the edge of the area, but Mayo captain Noe Baba headed well wide. Rovers had a chance to add to their lead on 74 minutes when a free kick from the right was delivered deep, but McCarry’s header went wide at the near post.

Despite being required to defend deep for periods, Letterkenny remained a threat on the counterattack. Jamie Harris and Ryan Lonergan combined well down the right on 82 minutes to create a chance for Cathal McGeever, whose header was held by the Mayo goalkeeper.

Harris then chased a long ball late on and forced Fox to rush out of his box to clear the danger.

Rovers made the points completely safe in added time.

Shane McNamee collected a through ball from halfway and drove at the Mayo goal. Showing composure, he stepped around the advancing goalkeeper before placing the ball into the net to complete a memorable 3–0 victory.

The final whistle was greeted warmly by the home support as Letterkenny Rovers secured an excellent result in their first National League match at Leckview Park.
