Letterkenny Rovers bow out of the Voodoo Cup

Rovers made a slow start and found it difficult to settle during the opening 20 minutes. However, they gradually grew into the game, with Dualtach McCauley coming close when he struck the crossbar from a tight angle.

Goalkeeper Davin Blake played a key role in ensuring the sides went in level at the interval, producing several excellent saves to keep the score at 0–0.

The second half brought a much-improved Rovers performance. Cory Oliver and Dualtach McCauley caused Bonagee problems from wide areas as the visitors began to take more control of the game.

Rovers took a deserved lead on 63 minutes. Oliver produced a clever backheel to release Ryan Callaghan, whose cross found Darragh Morrison. Morrison finished neatly to put Rovers 1–0 ahead.

Bonagee drew level from the penalty spot on 77 minutes, and with neither side able to find a winner before the final whistle, the cup tie moved into extra time.

Rovers continued to enjoy plenty of possession and regained the lead when Oliver supplied another excellent delivery from the left. The ball eventually fell to Aaron Kerr, who slid in to make it 2–1.

There was further drama in the second half of extra time as Bonagee equalised from a set piece, with Rovers also reduced to 10 players in the process. Bonagee then used the numerical advantage to score again a minute later, before adding a fourth on the counterattack as Rovers pushed forward in search of another equaliser.

It was a match that had everything: chances, strong goalkeeping, goals, extra time and plenty of drama. While the result was disappointing, the Young Rovers can take real encouragement from their second-half and extra-time display, particularly the character shown to take the lead twice against a strong Bonagee side.
