Letterkenny Rovers played their second league game of the season on Saturday, welcoming a physically strong Kildrum Tigers side to Leckview Astro in mild conditions.

Rovers started brightly and created the first opening inside three minutes. Aaron Kerr delivered an excellent cross from the left, with Filip Duraj arriving at the back post, but the ball travelled across the face of goal without a finishing touch.

Kildrum grew into the game and carried a threat through direct play and set pieces. They went close on a number of occasions in the first half, including when a dangerous delivery from the right just evaded Corey McBride-Gillen before Aaron Temple narrowly missed at the back post. Rovers also had a good chance from distance when Alex McDevitt’s low free kick forced Kildrum goalkeeper Sean Friel into a save.

The sides went in level at the break after a hard-fought first half, with Rovers working well to contain the visitors and goalkeeper Davin Blake contributing when called upon.

Kildrum increased the pressure after the restart. Blake made an important save during a crowded goalmouth moment, before a subsequent header struck the post. The breakthrough arrived around 12 minutes into the second half, when Kildrum capitalised after a free kick was blocked and Ryan Higgins reacted to fire home from the right side of the area.

Rovers looked to respond and came close through a well-worked move involving Dualtach McCauley, Jack Duff and Kerr, whose effort found the side netting. The home side’s best chance came around the 70-minute mark: Kerr pulled the ball back from the left and, amid a scramble, Duraj, McDevitt and Darragh Morrison all had efforts blocked as Kildrum defended their goal well.

Kildrum sealed the points soon after, with Aaron Temple finishing a counter-attack to make it 2–0. Rovers continued to compete, while Blake made further saves late on to keep the scoreline to two.

It was a committed display from the young Rovers side against experienced and physical opposition, with Kildrum’s sustained second-half pressure ultimately proving the difference.
