Letterkenny Rovers overcame neighbours Bonagee United 4-0 in the Brian McCormick Cup Area Final on a sunny afternoon at Leckview Park.
Leading 1-0 at half-time, Rovers went on to score a further three goals in the second half to book their place in the semi-final of the main competition.
There was very little between the sides in the first half with Adrian Delap’s goal just after the half hour mark the only difference as he capitalised on a defensive error to rifle his shot into the top right hand corner of the net.
Josh Maxwell and Michael Doherty had a couple of long range efforts for Bonagee without really testing goalkeeper Mark Anthony McGinley.
The hosts doubled their lead on 51 minutes. On this occasion, the influential Shane McNamee robbed possession off Ciaran Kelly and raced through before guiding the ball past Andrew Nicholls into the net.
The stand out moment of the game arrived just before the hour mark from midfielder Joel Gorman who spotted Nicholls off his line and from just inside his own half executed his shot to perfection as it sailed into the net – a real goal of the season contender!
On 64 minutes, Rovers added a fourth goal to wrap up the win. Gorman delivered a free-kick into the box and Lee McMonagle headed home at the second attempt after his initial effort was kept out.
The sides meet again in a top of the table clash in the league at Leckview Park next Sunday.
