Letterkenny Rovers starting 11 for the first game of the 2026/27 season in the Brian McCormick Cup.

Letterkenny Rovers began the defence of the Brian McCormick Cup with a dramatic late win over Fanad United at Leckview Park on Sunday afternoon.
Played in very warm conditions, the match was an entertaining end-to-end affair in which both sides enjoyed sustained spells of pressure. The two goalkeepers were kept busy throughout, with Rovers’ Bryan da Costa and Fanad goalkeeper Mark McConigley both making several important saves.

Rovers created the first clear opening on 10 minutes when Cormac Dunleavy won possession on the left, drove to the by-line and tested McConigley with an effort from a tight angle. Kevin McGrath later sent Jason Doherty through with an excellent pass, but Doherty’s inviting ball across the face of goal narrowly evaded a finishing touch.
Fanad carried a real threat of their own and forced Rovers to defend several dangerous deliveries into the area. Fouad Bashar dealt well with two such situations in the first half, while da Costa was alert to gather a number of efforts from distance. At the other end, Filip Duraj went close after Nathan Bonner’s strong run and cross from the right, while Dunleavy and Doherty were both denied by fine saves from the Fanad goalkeeper late in the first half.

The second half continued in the same open fashion. Da Costa made a strong save early in the half and later produced a superb reflex stop when Fanad created a close-range opportunity following a dangerous cross from the left. He also dealt with further efforts as Fanad pressed for a breakthrough.
Rovers introduced Jack Duff on 70 minutes and he made an immediate impact, forcing another save from McConigley with a strike from inside the area before seeing a header from a Dunleavy cross kept out. Igor Arriel also threatened when he got in behind the Fanad defence, but the chance slipped away as he approached goal.
With the game appearing to be heading for a stalemate, Rovers found the decisive moment in the 90th minute. Dunleavy delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area and Henry Welles found space to send a fine header back across goal and into the net.

Rovers saw out the closing stages to secure a narrow win and progress to the next round, overcoming a resilient Fanad United side in an absorbing opening fixture.
