Bonagee United claimed all three points in the opening game of the Donegal Women’s Senior League with a hard-fought victory over local rivals Letterkenny Rovers.
The Rovers ladies marked a special occasion as they played their first game on the new grass pitch at Leckview Park, delivering a spirited and committed performance.
Bonagee started strongly, applying early pressure, but the Rovers defence of Aoife, Ella, Leanne, and Lucy stood firm, making crucial blocks and interceptions to keep their opponents at bay.
In midfield, Aisling, Erin, and Sophie battled well, while dangerous deliveries to wingers Aoibhlinn and Hannah caused problems for the Bonagee defence throughout the game.
The breakthrough came on 33 minutes when Catherine Grier struck from long range to give Bonagee the lead.
Bonagee pushed to extend their advantage, but Rovers responded with determination, restricting their opponents to long-range efforts which goalkeeper Megan McGinley dealt with confidently.
Late on, a long ball forward was well controlled by Elisha, who set Hannah through on goal, but her effort was gathered by Bonagee goalkeeper Niamh.
In injury time, Natalie McFadden added a second goal for Bonagee to seal the win.
It was a strong overall team performance from Letterkenny Rovers, while Hannah Hopkins and Grace McBride stood out for Bonagee.
