Johnny’s Role at Letterkenny Rovers
In 2025, Johnny was appointed as Club Inclusion and Disability Officer, a significant and exciting step in our journey to make Letterkenny Rovers a club for all. Since then, he has been at the heart of our strategy to ensure football is accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable for players of all abilities.
Through his role, Johnny has helped shape policies, programmes, and matchday experiences that prioritise respect, belonging, and opportunity for every player and family connected to the club.
Driving Football for All
Johnny has played an instrumental role in the development and growth of our Football for All programme. His work has provided a safe, fun, and structured environment where players with additional needs can learn, play, and build friendships through football.
Families regularly highlight the importance of the programme in their children’s lives, and players have spoken about how much it means to them to wear the Rovers badge and be part of a team. This impact is a direct reflection of Johnny’s commitment, empathy, and enthusiasm on and off the pitch.
Partnership with the FAI and Local Schools
Johnny’s efforts extend far beyond our training pitch at Leckview. Working closely with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and development officers such as Paul Smyth and Trevor Scanlon, he has helped deliver inclusive football sessions in local schools across Letterkenny and the surrounding areas.
These school visits give children a chance to experience football in a fun, supportive setting and help promote the message that there is a place in the game for everyone. For many pupils, Johnny’s sessions are their first introduction to structured football – and they leave with smiles, confidence, and a sense of possibility.
Impact on Players and Families
The most powerful testament to Johnny’s work comes from the players themselves. One of our Football for All players, Mark Edwards, spoke about how much the programme means to him and how it has become a central part of his life. Stories like Mark’s highlight how football can build confidence, independence, and community when inclusion is at the heart of what we do.
Parents and guardians regularly speak about Johnny’s kindness, patience, and ability to connect with every player as an individual.
